Most scissors are an afterthought. You buy a pair at a pharmacy, they live in a drawer for a decade, they cut badly from day one and get worse. You tolerate them because scissors are scissors. Then you use a good pair once and you can’t go back.

The Olfa SCS-2 is a good pair.

The blades

Olfa is best known for snap-off utility knives — they invented the format in 1956 — and they bring the same obsessive approach to blade quality to everything else they make. The SCS-2’s stainless steel blades are ground to a fine edge and micro-serrated along one side. That serration does something useful: it prevents material from sliding forward as you cut, which means fabric, paper, wrapping, tape, and thin card all behave themselves without you having to fight them.

The blades meet cleanly along their full length with no gap and no slop. On cheaper scissors, you can feel the blades flexing past each other as they close — a slight catching, a slight give. These don’t do that. They close like a single precise mechanism.

The balance

At 16cm, these sit comfortably in most hands. The ABS resin handles are moulded with a slight finger-shaped curve that sounds gimmicky but genuinely reduces fatigue over extended use. The pivot is tight but smooth — adjusted just right from the factory, which not all manufacturers bother to do.

The weight distribution is slightly blade-heavy, which is exactly what you want for controlled cuts. Light handle, weighted blade, you guide rather than push.

What they’re for

These aren’t fabric shears or kitchen scissors — they’re a desk tool. Paper, card, labels, packaging, thread, light wrapping. The kind of cutting you do twenty times a day without thinking. The SCS-2 makes all of it cleaner and faster than you expect, which sounds like a small thing until you’ve been using them for a week and reach for them every time without thinking.

They also look right on a desk. The black handles and silver blades are understated in a way that most stationery tools aren’t. They don’t shout about what they are.
